I saw the great wall on my own at Simitai, and with Karl at Badaling. Simitai is a little less crowded and has only minor restoration, while Badaling is fully restored and a bit crowded. I could go on and on, but, in a nutshell, the views are great and getting there and away without getting ripped off by your tour guide is a real adventure.
